Hong Kong's Current Country Parks

Hiking lovers rejoice! There's news of a brand-new country park and hiking trails set for 2024.

All official hiking trails in Hong Kong's 24 current country parks are planned, built and maintained by the Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department (AFCD).

The list of Hong Kong's current country parks includes the following (in chronological order):

  1. Shing Mun was designated on 24.06.1977 and covers an area of 1400 hectares.
  2. Lion Rock was designated on 24.06.1977 and covers an area of 557 hectares.
  3. Kam Shan was designated on 24.06.1977 and covers an area of 339 hectares.
  4. Aberdeen was designated on 28.10.1977 and covers an area of 423 hectares.
  5. Tai Tam was designated on 28.10.1977 and covers an area of 1315 hectares.
  6. Sai Kung West was designated on 03.02.1978 and covers an area of 3000 hectares.
  7. Lantau South was designated on 20.04.1978 and covers an area of 5646 hectares.
  8. Lantau North was designated on 18.08.1978 and covers an area of 2200 hectares.
  9. Pat Sin Leng was designated on 18.08.1978 and covers an area of 3125 hectares.
  10. Plover Cove was designated sometime in 1978 and covers an area of 4600 hectares.
  11. Sai Kung East was designated sometime in 1978 and covers an area of 4494 hectares.
  12. Kiu Tsui was designated on 01.06.1979 and covers an area of 100 hectares.
  13. Tai Lam was designated on 23.02.1979 and covers an area of 5412 hectares.
  14. Tai Mo Shan was designated on 23.02.1979 and covers an area of 1440 hectares.
  15. Lam Tsuen was designated on 23.02.1979 and covers an area of 1520 hectares.
  16. Ma On Shan was designated on 27.04.1979 and covers an area of 2880 hectares.
  17. Plover Cove (Extension) was designated on 01.06.1979 and covers an area of 630 hectares.
  18. Pok Fu Lam was designated on 21.09.1979 and covers an area of 270 hectares.
  19. Tai Tam (Quarry Bay Ext.) was designated on 21.09.1979 and covers an area of 270 hectares.
  20. Shek O was designated on 21.09.1979 and covers an area of 701 hectares.
  21. Clear Water Bay was designated on 28.09.1979 and covers an area of 615 hectares.
  22. Sai Kung West (Wan Tsai Ext.) was designated on 14.06.1996 and covers an area of 123 hectares.
  23. Lung Fu Shan was designated on 18.12.1998 and covers an area of 47 hectares.
  24. Lantau North (Ext.) was designated on 07.11.2008 and covers an area of 2360 hectares.

Hong Kong's Next Country Park: Robin's Nest

In an interview with Mr. Fai Fai (Felix) Yeung, who serves as an AFCD Country Parks Officer, details emerged of the AFCD designating a new country park and building subsequent hiking trails within the upcoming country park.

Mr Yeung said, "We (the AFCD) are working on the preparation to designate the Robin’s Nest Country Park in 2024.  It is planned to build two new Country Trails in this new (25th) country park.  Details of the new Robin’s Nest Country Park and its country trails will be officially announced in due course."
