Why Hike Brick Hill?
Brick Hill, or Nam Long Shan ( 南朗山), is a little-known trail that's great for anyone on a time crunch. Within 45 minutes of leaving Wong Chuk Hang MTR, you'll be gazing over some of Hong Kong's best ocean vistas!
Best of all, the trail isn't very crowded since most people will opt to do the nearby Ap Lei Pai hike instead. This makes Brick Hill a bit of a secret hidden in plain sight!
This hike is pretty easy for the most part, as even the stairs aren't particularly relentless or brutal. I saw a few young kids climbing to the top, so it's genuinely one of the simpler and shorter hikes in the city.
The History of Brick Hill
Brick Hill was actually the site of Hong Kong’s earliest brick-producing factory. The earliest mention of the brick works factory dates back to 1889 when it was owned by The Hong Kong Brick & Cement Co. Ltd.
In 1896, the brick works factory was sold to the Green Island Cement Co. who ran the plant until 1927, when it shut down for good.
There are reports and photos of people finding bricks from different eras of the brick works factory’s history, which is pretty cool!
